The World Travel & Tourism Council said on Wednesday that the global travel and tourism sector’s contribution to the global economy could reach $8.6 trillion in 2022 as it starts to recover from the pandemic.
The WTTC, a voluntary institution which oversees the economic and social contribution of the travel and tourism industries, said its latest research shows that if the sector’s recovery continues to pick up pace its contribution could almost reach pre-pandemic levels this year.
In 2019 the travel and tourism industry’s contribution to the global economy was almost $9.2 trillion, it said.
The institution added that the sector’s contribution to global employment could reach over 330 million jobs, just 1% below pre-pandemic levels and 22% above 2020.
The WTTC urged governments to continue implementing digital solutions allowing travelers to prove their status easily and securely, and called for the standardization of measures.
“To reach close-to-pre-pandemic GDP and employment levels this year… governments around the world must continue focusing on the vaccine and booster rollout – allowing fully vaccinated travelers to move freely without the need for additional testing, and for others to travel with a negative test,” it said.
