Jennifer Lopez flipped the script on newly-single Hoda Kotb after being asked about her personal life.
The “On The Floor” singer, 52, tried to dodge questions about her relationship with boyfriend Ben Affleck when she appeared on “Today” Thursday to promote her upcoming romantic comedy “Marry Me.”
During the interview, Kotb — who announced her split from Joel Schiffman earlier this week — held up a magazine cover of Lopez while strategically covering up news about her own relationship woes in the corner.
“You look beautiful on People [magazine]. Let me just block out this corner,” Kotb said, covering part of the cover with her hand.
“Why [are] you trying to block out the corner? You don’t want to talk about your personal stuff? Is that what it is, Hoda?” Lopez responded as she grabbed the magazine from the host.
Kotb simply replied, “Touché.” Her co-host Savannah Guthrie described the moment as “mutually assured destruction.”
Earlier in the interview, the hosts tried to dig into Lopez’s romance with Affleck, with Guthrie noting that “so many people can relate to the one who got away or the one you always wondered about.”
“How did you find each other again?” Guthrie asked.
After Lopez said she could tell Guthrie and Kotb the story “backstage,” the singer added, “I think what we learned from the last time is that love, when you are lucky enough to find it, is so sacred and special and you have to hold a little bit of that privately, and that’s what we’ve learned. But we’re very happy, if that’s what you’re wondering about.”
The trio also talked about the complexities of love while discussing Lopez’s upcoming film, with the singer commenting that it’s like the song “Life is a Journey” where one questions their previous decisions and one day it all just makes sense.
Kotb stated that she “would rather be someone who believes in true love than someone who doesn’t.”
“Oh my god, that’s what life is all about, love and happiness,” Lopez said, adding that having a healthy relationship starts with “loving yourself and being good on your own.”
Lopez rekindled her relationship with Affleck in April 2021, 17 years after they parted ways. They were previously engaged from 2002 to 2004 before calling it quits due to the intense media scrutiny into their romance.
The “Hustlers” star recently gushed over her relationship with Affleck, telling People in her cover story interview that she’s “never been better.”
“I feel so lucky and happy and proud to be with him. It’s a beautiful love story that we got a second chance,” she said.
Meanwhile, Kotb announced her split from Schiffman Monday after eight years together.
“Joel and I have had a lot of prayerful and meaningful conversations over the holidays,” she said on “Today.” “We decided that we’re better as friends and parents than we are as an engaged couple, so we decided we are going to start this new year … on our new path as loving parents to our adorable, delightful children, and as friends.”
Schiffman and Kotb share two daughters, Haley, 4, and Hope, 2.
“Marry Me” will be released on Feb. 11.
