A TikTok content creator recently received backlash for calling Singapore brand Charles & Keith a “luxury bag” after posting a video of herself unwrapping a gift from her father.
When the 17-year-old Singapore-based Filipina Zoe received a Charles & Keith black tote from her dad, she immediately shared it with her followers. The video created on Jan. 8 to celebrate her happy moment garnered over 9.7 million views as of press time.
Viewers flooded the comments section with congratulatory and positive responses after a user appeared to meanly comment the phrase “Who’s gonna tell her?” followed by the laughing emoji, Spot.ph reported.
“It’s true.. not all people can afford Charles & Keith.. so you go girl! Be proud of it!” one wrote. Another added, “Every sporean girl’s first lux bag.”
“Congratulations! my daughter got the same bag 2 weeks back her first luxury bag too,” a different user commented.
Meanwhile, some claimed the brand was not “luxury” enough. Charles and Keith is part of the LVMH, a French-holding multinational corporation specializing in luxury goods — the umbrella group that holds Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior and Marc Jacobs, among others.
In a follow-up video addressing the since-deleted comment, Zoe responded by sharing her family’s story. They immigrated to Singapore from the Philippines in 2010, and growing up, her family “did not have a lot.” She added that they couldn’t even buy “bread from Breadtalk,” a popular bakery chain that originated in Singapore.
“Your comment spoke volumes about how ignorant you seem because of your wealth. To you an $80 bag may not be a luxury, (but) for me and my family, it is a lot. And I’m so grateful that my dad was able to get me one. He worked so hard for that money,” she tearfully addressed the commenter, saying she “can’t believe that she got hate over a bag” that she was so excited to have.
A few days after the video was posted, a spokesperson from Charles and Keith reportedly contacted Zoe and her father, inviting them to a meal with the brand’s founders, including a tour of their headquarters, Marketing-Interactive reported.
Following the viral video, Zoe and her family were also treated by Singapore resto Takagi Ramen to a meal at their restaurant. Several brands have also reportedly reached out and expressed support for Zoe in the comments section of her videos.
