Tammy Slaton survived a major health scare in the season finale of “1000-lb Sisters.”
On the TLC show’s Season 3 finale, Tammy’s brother Chris said the 35-year-old reality star was rushed in an ambulance to the hospital as a result of her having “taken a turn for the worse” a day after she got to a weight loss rehab facility, People reported.
Tammy, who went to the Ohio facility as she was struggling with depression, heavy drinking and vaping, “had quit breathing” after her brother and her sister-in-law Brittany dropped her off, Chris said.
“They’re just telling us that her lungs have given up, and like her body is shutting down,” Tammy’s sister Amanda said in the episode, which was filmed last year. “So at this point, you know, we’re facing making funeral arrangements for my little sister.”
“I’m just sitting here thinking, ‘Oh my god.’ She’s been in such a bad place for so long. She waited too long. And now that she has the courage to step out and get the help that she needs, now this,” Amanda continued.
Doctors had put Tammy on a ventilator and in a medically induced coma.
According to Chris, the doctors had not been sure if she would make it through the night, but Tammy woke up after four days of her family watching over her at the hospital. Chris added that when Tammy became conscious, she kept telling her family that she loved them and wanted to go home.
Tammy was subsequently given a tracheotomy — a surgical procedure that creates a hole in the throat to insert a breathing tube — to easily facilitate any future breathing support. She stayed at the hospital for three weeks.
After she was discharged, Tammy returned to rehab, and she was making great progress. Chris said Tammy had already lost 115 pounds after 30 days at the facility.
Tammy is aiming to get down to 500 pounds as her bariatric doctor Dr. Eric Smith said she can get weight loss surgery if she hits her goal.
“I’m overjoyed that she’s ready to get on this train and start rolling down the tracks,” Chris said.
Earlier in the episode, Tammy had decided she was “fed up with being sick all the time” from drinking and partying and was ready to go back to rehab.
“I’m not doing this for anybody but myself,” she said. “I’ve decided to put myself first. Take care of Tammy.”
“1000-lb Sisters” Season 3 aired its finale episode Monday. TLC has not yet announced if the show will be renewed for another season.
